We are now interviewing Certified Special Education Teachers to join our team in Kent, Washington. This opening is Full Time for the full school working with your preferred age group. The caseload for this opening consist of Mild -Moderate disabilities and disorders. The district is currently only considering onsite candidates for this role. For responsibilities and qualifications please read below. 

Qualifications (Nonnegotiable): 

  • Must have a degree in Special Education 
  • Must have the proper certifications and endorsements as mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. 
  • Must have the Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS!) Endorsement 
  • Ability and willingness to provide medical or health services such as catheterization, diapering, toileting, feeding, tube feeding and assisting students with other activities involving self-care, which may be required.
  • Must have the ability to pass a drug screen and background check

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree with major/minor in special education
  • ELL endorsement
  • Thorough knowledge of special education laws and the ability to plan, implement and evaluate individualized programs for students.
  • Background/experience in team teaching (in-class and pull-out models) and be willing to work with high needs students.
  • Ability to establish rapport with staff, students, community, and create strong interagency linkages.
  • Possess strong management skills and the ability to develop and implement programs based on individual student needs (physical, personal hygiene, feeding, communications, transition, etc.), establish goals, and plan in-service and activities to meet those stated goals.
  • Knowledge of differing student learning styles.
  • Comfortable with team teaching, integration with regular classroom, inclusion, and some small groups.
  • Demonstrated strength in a variety of behavior management approaches.
  • Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics
  • Desired teacher characteristics are: flexibility; ability to organize ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals; enthusiasm; ability to express ideas clearly and understand concepts being discussed; ability to learn new ideas and skills; ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students; knowledge of current approaches to teaching; and willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and the community.

 

Job Summary: 

Early childhood special education teachers work with students who have developmental difficulties, such as speech and vision problems, limited motor skills, sensory-processing difficulties, or special learning challenges.

Students in these age groups may be newly diagnosed and the special education teacher plays a role in determining what services and accommodations they will need. Parents may still be coming to terms with their child’s special needs and will need support and advice.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administering special education testing
  • Evaluating special-needs students, determining skill levels, and functional capabilities
  • Modifying lessons and revising the standard curriculum to match the child’s functional capacity and accommodations
  • Co-teaching in integrated learning settings
  • Meeting parents and others to review goals and assess progress
  • Creating materials to assist in teaching
  • Helping children, such as those with cerebral palsy, who need assistance with motor skills and eating/drinking
  • Providing an appropriate learning environment for students, such as those with sensory-processing challenges
  • Advising parents on how to work with their child
  • Instructing students one-on-one in imitation, repetition, and step-by-step problem solving
  • Completing evaluative and accommodation forms such as IEPs
