Special Education Teacher in Chicago, IL
Make a meaningful impact as a Special Education Teacher working in a self-contained classroom focused on Academic Life Skills for students with autism, Down Syndrome, and significant medical needs. This full-time contract position, conveniently located near Chicago, offers a rewarding daily schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:35 AM to 3:30 PM.
Utilize your expertise in adapted instruction, IEP management, and supporting students requiring individualized classroom and medical accommodations. With a manageable caseload of 7–9 students and dedicated support, you will collaborate with a dynamic team passionate about creating supportive and inclusive learning environments.
What we’re looking for:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 Endorsement
- Proven experience in a self-contained special education setting, supporting students with low-incidence disabilities and life-skills needs
- Deep knowledge of differentiated instruction, behavior management, and inclusive teaching strategies
- Strong organizational skills for effective IEP creation and implementation
- Compassionate communicator ready to collaborate with families, therapists, and additional support staff
What you’ll do:
- Develop and deliver individualized life-skills curriculum for a diverse group of learners
- Directly manage student IEPs and ensure compliance with legal and programmatic requirements
- Support classroom routines adapted for mobility, communication, and medical needs
- Foster a safe, nurturing classroom culture that values each student’s growth and independence
- Communicate progress and collaborate closely with team members and caregivers
