Special Education Teacher in Meriden, CT
Shape the future for young adults by supporting their transition to independence in a specialized school-based program for students ages 18-22. You'll collaborate closely with job coaches and paraprofessionals to facilitate career exploration, daily living skills, and community experiences, helping students reach their next milestones.
Your primary focus will be on administration and coordination rather than direct instruction. Monitor progress, update individualized goals such as opening bank accounts or applying for employment, and maintain engagement with both caregivers and community partners. Occasional IEP meetings occur throughout the year, and you'll have the support of a dedicated team who shares your commitment to empowering students. Experience with the NextUp transition curriculum and knowledge of Department of Developmental Services (DDS) processes are strong assets.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Valid Connecticut endorsement in Special Education
- A minimum of 2 years recent teaching experience
- Proven ability working with young adults in a transition/young adult program
- Experience with Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and community-based transition resources is preferred
- Comfort with administrative responsibilities and goal management
- Familiarity with transition curriculums, especially NextUp, is advantageous
Core Responsibilities:
- Oversee job site training, daily living skills, and community access for a small student caseload
- Coordinate with job coaches and paraprofessional staff
- Monitor, assess, and document progress on individualized goals
- Attend a limited number of IEP meetings annually
- Foster independence in students, guiding them toward adult services and self-advocacy
