Elementary Special Education Teacher | Chicago, Illinois
Step into a pivotal role supporting young learners by providing specialized instruction in a collaborative, full-time classroom setting. This contract opportunity is tailored for an experienced Special Education professional eager to make a difference in the lives of 5th-grade students. You’ll work closely with dedicated educators in an inclusive elementary school environment, guiding a caseload of six exceptional students (with the potential for a seventh) and utilizing your expertise to foster growth, confidence, and achievement.
Key qualifications and experience:
- Valid Illinois PEL with LBS1 endorsement is required
- Prior experience teaching special education, preferably at the elementary level
- Strong skills in co-teaching and adapting curriculum to varied learning needs
- Collaborative mindset, comfortable partnering with general education teachers, therapists, and families
- Passion for fostering a positive, inclusive classroom culture
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities
Primary responsibilities:
- Co-teach a 5th-grade classroom, planning and implementing differentiated instruction
- Develop and monitor Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in accordance with state requirements
- Use data-driven strategies to assess student progress and adjust interventions as needed
- Support social, emotional, and behavioral development through evidence-based practices
- Partner with families and interdisciplinary teams to create consistent, supportive interventions
- Maintain thorough documentation for compliance and reporting
This position offers a contract running from early October 2026 through June 2027, with a weekly commitment of 35-37 hours, giving you the consistency and engagement to build genuine rapport with students and the school community.
