Remote Special Education Teacher (SPED) - Michigan

Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education from an accredited institution 

• Active Michigan Standard or Professional Teaching Certificate with a Special Education endorsement (e.g., CI, EI, LD, or ASD) issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) 

• Minimum of 2+ years of experience (school-based and/or virtual instruction preferred) 

• Proficiency with Michigan IEP processes, MiStar/Edplan systems, and progress monitoring 

• Strong instructional design, differentiated teaching methods, and positive behavioral support skills 

• Comfortable navigating telepractice platforms, digital curricula, and remote learning management systems

Key Responsibilities Assessment & Specialized Instruction 

• Design and deliver direct virtual specialized instruction (individual and small group) aligned with students' IEP goals across academic areas 

• Administer informal and formal academic diagnostic assessments and progress-monitoring checks to gauge student development 

• Differentiate general education curriculum and implement individualized accommodations and modifications 

• Collect and analyze instructional data continuously to drive educational planning and goal mastery

Collaboration & Case Management 

• Manage virtual student caseloads and coordinate special education services with multidisciplinary teams 

• Partner closely with general education teachers, related service providers (SLPs, OTs, School Psychologists), paraprofessionals, and parents 

• Schedule, organize, and facilitate virtual IEP team meetings, annual reviews, and REED (Review of Existing Evaluation Data) conferences

Documentation & Compliance 

• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation of direct service logs, progress reports, and IEP goal updates 

• Ensure all instructional interventions and IEP development strictly adhere to Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), district policies, and IDEA mandates 

• Complete thorough academic evaluation summaries, present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP), and compliance paperwork

Technology & Virtual Delivery 

• Utilize interactive virtual classroom platforms, digital whiteboards, and assistive technology tools to maximize student engagement 

• Adapt curriculum materials into accessible digital formats suited for remote learners 

• Provide platform guidance and technical support to onsite facilitators, paraprofessionals, and families

Advocacy & Student Empowerment 

• Foster student independence, executive functioning, and self-advocacy skills within the virtual learning environment 

• Provide instructional strategies, behavior support guidance, and educational resources to families and general education teachers
