Special Education Teacher - Irwin, Pennsylvania
Step into a dynamic contract role delivering meaningful impact as a Special Education Teacher supporting students with visual impairments and additional challenges. This opportunity, situated in Western Pennsylvania, involves close collaboration with a dedicated educational team that includes specialists in orientation & mobility, assistive technology, and related services. As a long-term substitute (up to two school years), you’ll be empowered to grow—provided support to complete certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired through a recognized university partnership.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (K-12) required
- Strong understanding of instruction for students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration abilities
- Experience teaching students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities (preferred)
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist in positioning students and equipment
- Willingness to work in varied environments, including therapy pool and outdoor settings
- Commitment to respectful and effective teamwork
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement effective IEPs, adapting curriculum and materials to accessible formats (braille, tactile graphics, etc.)
- Conduct vision and media assessments; use assistive technologies to foster meaningful learning
- Lead instructional aides and collaborate closely with related service providers
- Actively engage families and participate in IEP meetings, fostering student independence and growth
- Maintain accurate data on student progress and adjust instruction based on analysis
- Create an inclusive, supportive classroom environment and implement Positive Behavior Intervention Plans
- Stay current through ongoing professional development
