Special Education Teacher | New Britain, Connecticut
Make an impact guiding young adults ages 18-22 towards independent lives in a Transition Program focused on worksite training and daily living skills. In this contract position, you’ll coordinate with job coaches and paraprofessionals to help students gain practical experience—everything from opening bank accounts to applying for jobs—while using the NextUp curriculum to advance each learner’s personalized goals. The group consists of 7-8 students, making for meaningful relationships and targeted support.
This role stands out for its administrative focus: you’ll monitor, track, and update progress for IEPs, collaborating with families and stakeholders, attending around 7-10 IEP meetings over the year, and ensuring transition objectives are met. Your daily work will balance guiding staff, overseeing student growth, and maintaining program compliance within a supportive, specialized environment.
Ideal candidates will bring:
- Current Connecticut Special Education Endorsement
- At least 2 years of recent classroom experience
- Background in young adult transition programming, including familiarity with Department of Developmental Services and post-22 transition resources
- Strong communication and team leadership skills
- Experience collaborating with job coaches, paraprofessionals, and families
Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing and updating student goals for independent and workplace readiness
- Coordinating with transition support staff and external agencies
- Organizing instruction related to daily living and community participation
- Attending and contributing to annual or milestone IEP meetings
- Supporting implementation of the NextUp curriculum
