This contract opportunity spans Grades 6–12, serving a unique school community of 78 students across 10 self-contained classrooms. Each classroom maintains an 8:1:3 student-to-staff ratio, providing a supportive environment for individuals with level 3 autism, significant cognitive disabilities, and students utilizing alternative communication methods—including many who are non-verbal. Two roles are available: supporting middle school-age learners with academic needs, or working with high school and young adult pre-vocational students.
Key Qualifications:
- Possess or be actively pursuing New York State Special Education certification (Students with Disabilities). Recent master’s graduates or those transferring teaching licenses from another state are encouraged—support for license transfer may be available.
- Bachelor’s degree considered, but advanced degree strongly preferred.
- Background working with level 3 autism, severe behavioral needs, or students who use alternative communication/medical supports is highly valued.
- Experience in modifying curriculum and applying alternative assessments is desirable.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver tailored instruction in a small group setting for middle or high school/young adult students.
- Implement and adapt IEP goals, utilizing creative teaching strategies for students with diverse abilities and needs.
- Collaborate with classroom staff (ratio 8:1:3) to create a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
- Prepare and maintain student documentation, with flexibility to work up to 40 hours weekly to accommodate additional IEP or planning work outside scheduled class time.
- Foster communication and life skills, particularly for students using alternative or non-verbal methods.
