Special Education Teacher | Silver Spring, Maryland
Make an impact as a Special Education professional supporting middle school students with unique learning needs in a specialized setting near Silver Spring, MD. Work on a collaborative team equipped with two paraeducators, fostering growth for students aged 11-14 with autism and intellectual disabilities. This contract position offers consistency, running from early January through June, with a manageable caseload of just four students.
Students in this classroom benefit from a variety of communication supports; two use devices while others communicate verbally and with visual aids. As an educator, you’ll design engaging instruction, address complex communication and behavioral needs, and develop strategies for challenging behaviors such as physical aggression, spitting, disrobing, and elopement.
What we’re looking for:
- Valid Maryland Special Education Teacher license with High School Endorsement
- Proven experience delivering individualized instruction for students with autism and intellectual disabilities
- Skilled in using and teaching augmentative/alternative communication devices
- Ability to implement behavioral interventions and crisis prevention techniques
- Experience collaborating with paraeducators and related service providers
- Strong organizational, documentation, and planning skills
Key role responsibilities:
- Plan, deliver, and adapt lessons to meet instructional, behavioral, and communication needs
- Foster a safe and supportive environment for students
- Collaborate with paraeducators to implement individualized student plans
- Communicate regularly with families and interdisciplinary teams
- Document student progress and maintain compliance with education plans
- Address behavioral incidents with proactive, positive supports
This position follows a Monday-Friday schedule, 7:30am–3:00pm, including a dedicated hour for planning each day and a 30-minute duty-free lunch, ensuring time for preparation and self-care.
