About the Role
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to support an elementary self-contained Autism classroom. This role is ideal for an educator passionate about working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and supporting their academic, behavioral, communication, and life skills development in a structured and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Provide individualized, standards-based instruction aligned with student goals
- Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies for students with ASD
- Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and PBIS strategies
- Collect and analyze student data; maintain accurate documentation and compliance
- Collaborate with related service providers, including:
- Speech-Language Pathologists
- Occupational Therapists
- School Psychologists
- Behavior Specialists
- Supervise and support classroom paraprofessionals
- Promote growth in:
- Communication and social skills
- Self-regulation
- Independence and daily living skills
- Maintain a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment
Student Population
- Elementary-aged students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Diverse needs including:
- Varying communication abilities
- Sensory and behavioral challenges
- Cognitive differences
- Self-contained classroom providing intensive, individualized support
Required Qualifications
- Active Virginia Special Education Teaching License (or eligibility)
- Experience developing and implementing IEPs
- Knowledge of special education compliance and documentation
- Strong behavior management and classroom leadership skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, specialists, and families
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Background in self-contained special education settings
- Familiarity with:
- ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) principles
- Structured teaching methods (e.g., TEACCH)
- Visual supports, social stories, and AAC systems
- Experience supporting students with significant cognitive/behavioral needs
- Crisis prevention and de-escalation training
