Special Education Teacher - Ellicott City, Maryland
Make a meaningful difference every day by supporting young adults in a self-contained special education classroom. This contract role is ideal for a dedicated educator passionate about empowering students with diverse learning, communication, and behavioral needs.
Your classroom will serve a small group of six students, ages 18 to 21, in a public, separate day school setting. With the collaboration of 2-3 paraeducators, you’ll guide learners through an alternate curriculum spanning English Language Arts, Math, and Vocational subjects. Your contributions will help students build skills for increased independence and future success.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid Maryland Special Education License with High School Endorsement
- Proven experience working with students with moderate to significant learning, communication, and behavioral needs
- Strong understanding of alternate curriculum instruction and transition planning
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
- Ability to create a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver targeted ELA, Math, and life skills instruction based on IEP goals and student strengths
- Adapt learning activities and materials to ensure accessibility and engagement for all students
- Collaborate with a supportive team of paraeducators to maximize student engagement and progress
- Participate in IEP meetings, data collection, and progress monitoring to guide instructional decisions
- Foster self-advocacy, vocational skills, and social-emotional growth for transitioning young adults
- Maintain a structured, predictable, and caring classroom environment
The schedule runs Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 3:00pm, and includes one hour daily of planning time and a 30-minute duty-free lunch.
