Special Education Teacher - Ellicott City, MD
Step into a meaningful role shaping the lives of young adults as a Special Education Teacher in a public separate day school setting. This contract opportunity supports a small caseload of six students, ages 18-21, with diverse learning, communication, and behavioral needs. You’ll provide instruction on alternate curriculum subjects including English Language Arts, Math, and Vocational skills, ensuring lessons are accessible and relevant as students transition into adulthood. The classroom is self-contained with robust paraeducator support, allowing for individualized attention and effective classroom management.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Valid Maryland Special Education Teacher License, with High School Endorsement required
- Experience in high school special education settings preferred
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for partnership with support staff and families
- Familiarity with alternate curriculum and transition planning highly desirable
- Ability to tailor instruction for varied learning and behavioral profiles
Primary Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging lessons in ELA, Math, and Vocational subjects following alternate curriculum guidelines
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education plans (IEPs)
- Foster a structured, supportive classroom environment for learners with complex needs
- Work closely with 2-3 dedicated paraeducators to address instructional and behavioral goals
- Maintain necessary records, conduct assessments, and report on student progress
- Support transition planning for young adults entering the workforce or further education
The schedule runs weekdays, 7:30am-3:00pm, including one hour of dedicated planning time and a 30-minute uninterrupted lunch break. The assignment extends through the end of the 2026-2027 school year, offering long-term consistency for both educator and students.
