Special Education Teacher in Laurel, MD

This contract opportunity calls for a compassionate Special Education Teacher to guide 18- to 21-year-old learners in a self-contained, public separate day school setting. You’ll work closely with a dedicated team of 2-3 paraeducator support staff, addressing learning, communication, and behavioral needs for a manageable caseload of just six students.
In this position, you’ll deliver an alternate curriculum covering English Language Arts, Math, and Vocational subjects, empowering your students to build essential academic and life skills. The role provides a consistent Monday-Friday schedule with a full hour each day set aside for planning and a 30-minute duty-free lunch—helping you maintain a healthy work-life balance as you make a difference.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid Maryland Special Education Teaching License with High School Endorsement
- Experience working with individuals with diverse learning, communication, and behavioral needs
- Ability to foster an encouraging, inclusive classroom environment
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities:
- Design and implement individualized instruction in ELA, Math, and Vocational areas
- Develop and adapt lesson plans to suit alternate curriculum standards and student IEPs
- Track student progress, communicate regularly with team members and families
- Collaborate with paraprofessional staff to provide consistent support
- Ensure a safe, respectful, and positive classroom atmosphere
