Position Overview
Jefferson County Schools is seeking dedicated and compassionate Exceptional Education (Ex Ed) Teachers for the 2026–2027 school year. The district has multiple openings across elementary and high school campuses, with a strong priority placed on filling elementary self-contained classroom positions.
This is an excellent opportunity for educators who are passionate about supporting students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs in a structured and supportive educational environment.

Small class sizes, typically 4–6 students
Maximum classroom size of 10 students
Students served vary based on disability level and educational needs
High School
Support students with individualized academic and functional goals
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement individualized instruction based on IEP goals.
- Create a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment.
- Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet student needs.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation.
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to student goal development.
- Implement behavior intervention plans and classroom management strategies as needed.
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal special education requirements.
Qualifications
Required
- Valid Alabama Special Education Teaching Certification or eligibility for certification
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, Special Education, or related field
- Ability to work onsite for the duration of the assignment
- Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills
Preferred
- Experience working in self-contained special education classrooms
- Experience supporting students with moderate to severe disabilities
- Knowledge of IEP development and implementation
- Elementary special education experience
