Special Education Teacher – Self-Contained / Adapted Classroom (K-8)

Employment Type: Full-time, Onsite, School-based

Schedule: Monday–Friday | School day (typically 7.5–8 hours) | ~180–190 contract days

Caseload / Class Size: 6–12 students (aligned with Georgia DOE maximums for self-contained settings; lower for higher-intensity needs)

Position Overview

  • We are seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to lead a self-contained or adapted (modified curriculum) classroom serving K-8 students with moderate to intensive support needs (e.g., intellectual disabilities, autism, emotional/behavioral disorders, multiple disabilities, or significant developmental delays).
  • This is a true classroom-based role focused on delivering specially designed instruction in a structured environment. You will case-manage your students’ IEPs, provide direct instruction across academic and functional domains, and collaborate closely with related service providers (including school psychologists, SLPs, OTs, BCBAs), paraprofessionals, and families.

Caseload & Hours Details

  • Caseload size: Typically 6–12 students. Georgia maximums for self-contained classrooms vary by disability category (e.g., ~6–7 for severe/profound intellectual disability or deaf-blind; ~8–11 for emotional/behavioral disorders or moderate intellectual disability; up to ~12–16 for specific learning disabilities with support). Actual numbers are kept manageable and are supported by paraprofessional staffing.
  • Daily hours: Full school day (approximately 7.5–8 hours), Monday–Friday. Includes instructional time, planning, IEP work, collaboration, and duties as assigned. Duty-free lunch is provided.
  • Contract year: Standard teacher calendar (~180–190 days), with professional development and planning days included. Additional extended days may be available or required for IEP timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver differentiated, IEP-aligned instruction in academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and adaptive/functional skills.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); serve as case manager for assigned students.
  • Implement positive behavior supports, behavior intervention plans, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Collect progress-monitoring data and complete required documentation and compliance tasks.
  • Supervise and direct paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers (for any inclusion opportunities), related service providers, administrators, and families.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary teams, and parent conferences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Valid Georgia teaching certificate in Special Education (or eligibility to obtain). Endorsement or experience with the specific disability categories served is a plus.
  • Experience in a self-contained, adapted, or intensive-support classroom preferred.
  • Strong skills in IEP development, behavior management, data collection, and collaboration.
  • Ability to implement accommodations/modifications and support students with significant needs (including possible assistance with personal care or mobility, as appropriate).
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student growth.
  • 1. Personal Information

  • 2. Professional Details

  • We accept .doc, .docx, .txt, .rtf, or .pdf and must be no larger than 3MB.

  • 3. Agreement
